GM sold more EVs and hybrids than gas cars for the first time in China

In a major milestone, GM formally offered extra EVs and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) fashions in China than gas-powered vehicles for the primary time. GM’s electrified fashions (EVs and PHEVs) accounted for 53% of gross sales within the third quarter as the corporate fights for a place in China’s intensifying auto market.

“We’re constructing momentum for each gross sales quantity and market share in China,” Steve Hill, president of GM China, mentioned on Thursday.

GM and its joint ventures delivered over 426,000 autos in China within the third quarter, up 14% from Q2 2024.

The expansion was pushed primarily by GM’s new vitality autos (NEVs), which embody EVs and plug-in hybrids. With over 224,000 items delivered within the third quarter, GM’s EV and hybrid fashions account for 53% of whole gross sales, surpassing gas-powered vehicles for the primary time.

GM’s NEV gross sales had been up 60.7% from final 12 months and 14.3% from Q2 2024, its highest sequential progress charge since Q3 2022.

Regardless of this, total gross sales slid 21% from final 12 months as gas-powered vehicles proceed falling out of favor in China.

GM is promoting extra EVs in China, however total gross sales slide

SAIC-GM-Wuling accounted for 77% of the corporate’s whole Q3 gross sales in China. The three way partnership’s compact EVs, together with the Wuling Hong Guang MINIEV and Wuling Bin Guo EV, accounted for over 130,000 of its Q3 gross sales alone.
